Foreword
So we crossed our little hurdles & brought out the first edition of our family newsletter with much gusto! Only to realize that it is indeed difficult to bring out new editions even once in a month! We march on, nonetheless.
The month of May saw dear Mridula & Ganesh come back from the US. The entire family met up over the multiple ceremonies of the grand Gruhapravesh of Nandabappa's new house! Schools re-opened, research done on future courses for Ashwini in the month of June. A lot has happened & we invite you all to send us your articles/photos or anything that you want to share with the family.
We were extremely delighted when both Pappa & Amma said that they had articles to share for this month's newsletter! We definitely hope that this will inspire the rest of the family to break free from hesitation & give words to their thoughts!
In this edition, we have Nishanth interviewing with Ashwini on the Jagli Katte and also an interesting article from Ashwini on our mythological lore.
We hope you enjoy reading! Do let us know your views.

Cryptic DaasaVaani
During the last newsletter, I had promised you all that if I do not hear from any of you about the meaning of this song, I will try to get it for the next edition of the newsletter. Well, I was hoping to hear back from someone...because the only saving grace I have on this topic is that I could get most of the lyrics written down after listening to it, like a million times! And I can only guess the meaning of the 1st line of the song!! The rest of the song continues to be as cryptic as ever!
Now, to try & explain the first line in English is quite tedious...this is the difference between English & Indian languages. The verb comes towards the end of the long sentence in Kannada where as explaining that in English requires the verb to come at the beginning! I had heard similar comments written in a very humorous way about German - I do not recollect the article now.
So, coming back to the song - In the 1st line, we are talking about the hero who stood on the head of the person who killed the father of the progeny of the blind man's brother!! So much for a clue!! I guess Kanakadasa never thought that there will be a time when Indians will not even know the main characters of the Mahabharata, forget riddling such complicated relationships in tow!!
For those who prefer thinking in pictures....
Any guesses so far? Well, my guess is this - we are talking about Vishnu who stood on the snake (Kalinga) - the snake that killed Janamejaya who was the father of the last known progeny of the Pandavas, Parikshit - who are the sons of the blind man, Dhritarashtra's brother, Pandu.
Below, you can find the lyrics of the song. I am unable to understand one of the words in the 1st paragraph. I have put that as hyphens. Intriguing song...enjoy it in the mellifluous voice of Vidyabhushana Swamiji!

TITLE: WHO ARE THEY..?
The Ramayana and The Mahabharata, the two great epics of our country, though they happened during two different eras, convey the same message—‘VICTORY OF DHARMA OVER ADHARMA’. Apart from this, they also have something else in common. Yes, when we go through both of them, we find a few characters appearing in both the stories. For example Lord Hanuman. Now just think how many more can you list? And once you have finished listing, send it to me so that we can put it up in our next edition. So start thinking………………..
-Ashwini.

Isn’t it a lovely place to sit and chat ?? Here is our new column . Every month, one of us will get a chance to sit on the ‘jagli katte’ and let others know a little more about us.
Now, do you know who is sitting on the jagli katte right now ? Well, he is the person who suggested this name for our newsletter. I am sure, you would have guessed it by now. Its Mr.Nishanth Pai. So go ahead and find out more about him.
Q. Your favourite pass time?
A.Pass time is when I can have some time to pass. But when I do get an opportunity, I like to read or given the chance, travel.
Q. Tell us something about your cooking skills.
A. Non existent.
Q. One thing you don't like to do?
A. Do something because it's been done the same way in the past.
Q. Which of your nicknames is your favourite?
A. None.
Q. Your hidden talent about which we are not aware?
A. Wouldn't be hidden if I told you, would it? :)
Q. The name you suggested for the newsletter was liked by all and was selected as the final name for our newsletter. How do you feel? And where did the idea come from?
A. It was a brainwave. I was thinking about something else and it suddenly struck me! It's a dual purpose serving name. Covers our world, as in the family and its 'coveru' and the world we live in..
Hmmm…… Smart answers, aren’t they? So this is it for now. But you better be prepared with your answers for the above questions. You never know. Next month, it
might be your turn to sit on ‘JAGLI KATTE’. So be prepared…………
Do you know?
In our last edition we asked you, how many of these things associated with the word Saraswati do you know? Answers in green!
1. One of the first Konkani magazines - Saraswati Prabha
(clue: Akhila, Mridula and Nitin loved the strange North Canara Konkani words in these magazines and would often read out stories aloud much to the amusement of the family!)
2. India's biggest literary award - Saraswati Samman
(no clues here, I'm sure you all know last year's recipient as well!)
3. Akhila, Mridula, Nitin and Nishanth's first business venture - Saraswati Laundry
(clue: it involved an orange truck where the driver would walk on all fours beside it! )
4. Founder of Arya Samaj - Swami Dayanand saraswati
The correct answers were given by Shanti Pai (she was the only person to answer). She gets a big round of applause and a tight hug J.
Note from Editor: Please send your articles, poll questions, games, poems etc (for the third edition) on or before 2nd of August to the editor. Please make sure that you have mentioned your article’s title and your name. Thank you.
